DIY Monsters Inc. Pumpkins…

DIY YOUR OWNMONSTERS INC.PUMPKINS!.png

I’m so excited to share this blog with you all! Troy and I celebrated 5 1/2 Years yesterday, so we decided to paint pumpkins! We picked monsters inc pumpkins because Troy loves Mike Wasowski (and I love Disney, obviously). 😉

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

IMG_3852.JPG

  • 1 small round pumpkin
  • 1 tall skinny pumpkin
  • Mike & Sully face cutouts (you can find these on google)
  • 4 toothpicks for the horns
  • Scissors
  • Blue, purple, and green acrylic paint
  • Modpodge
  • Hot glue gun

Here’s the process:

  1. The first thing you need to do is gather your materials, print and cut out the faces!
  2. Hot glue the toothpicks to the back of the horn cut outs.
  3. Paint one layer on the pumpkins. Let it dry.
  4. Paint a second layer on the pumpkins. Let it dry.
  5. Add a coat of modpodge to your pumpkins to protect the paint.
  6. Once all coats are dry, stick the toothpick horns into your pumpkins.
  7. Finally, hot glue the faces onto the pumpkins!

TA-DA!

These pumpkins were super easy to make and they are a big hit! Everyone loves them! Happy painting!

My College Experience…

BLOG26.png

In the fall of 2014 I moved into my freshman dorm and life officially changed forever.

First let me start off by giving you some background information: my university is a small private college 25 minutes from home, I was living in a one person dorm, and I was in a long term relationship with my high school sweetheart.

FRESHMAN YEAR

I did not want to live at school. I am a home body. Nothing about living in a single room with a shared community bathroom was appealing. My parents really pushed me to try it though, because they wanted me to get the “full college experience”.

I moved in, and it was a blast decorating and picking out things for my for my new dorm… but  I was not a fan of campus living. The dorm food was not healthy, girls on my floor were loud (drunk) in the middle of the night, and the boys who lived above me bounced basketballs at 3am. I went home (and stayed home) every single weekend.

Second semester rolled around and the weeks felt like years until the weekend would come and I got to go home. I missed my bed, my cats, and of course my boyfriend. I needed to find something to do with my time before I went insane.

Here’s the part where I go Greek

You all know I’m not a party girl, but I still wanted to have friends and be involved. I had the grades to go through formal recruitment, so I did. I kind of wanted to go Greek, and I also kind of didn’t care. However, I am the kind of person that will wonder what could have been if I did not at least try.

Recruitment was exactly what speed dating hundreds of girls would look like. It was exciting and nerve-wracking. I was drawn to the sisterhood, the philanthropy, and all the cute matching shirts (lets be honest). On preference day I had to make the decision between Kappa Delta and Zeta Tau Alpha (I am a KD legacy, btw)… and I WENT ZTA!

I felt that ZTA was a great fit for me. I liked the girls a lot and really resonated with their values. I am going to be honest- at first, it is really tough making friends (especially in a big sorority). But the more involved I got, the more I clicked with small groups of girls. My favorite experiences in ZTA were mother/daughter weekends, breast cancer awareness events, and of course getting my little!

SOPHOMORE YEAR

Sophomore year I moved back home (thank GOODNESS). I took a full semester of summer classes both years during my undergrad with the intention of graduating a full year early. A lot of people cringe at the thought of leaving their university a year early, but I was almost positive  I was going to get my masters degree there too. I really wanted to bust through all my classes (undergrad & grad) as fast as possible so that I could get a big girl job and start my life with Troy.

JUNIOR/SENIOR YEAR (Really senior year because I graduated in 3 years)

Senior year I was drowning in work, graduate school applications, directing a middle school cheerleading program, and working. I did a lot less with my sorority, but honestly I was okay with that because at this point I was ready to be done with everything… I was exhausted. But let me tell you, when May rolled around and I was handed my diploma- IT. WAS. ALL. WORTH. IT.

OVERALL

Overall, I love my university and I have made valuable memories there. My advice before starting your first semester of college is to know what kind of person you are, set goals for yourself, and embrace new opportunities.

CURRENTLY

Currently I am enrolled in my MSE School Counseling program at the same university, and I still live at home. My anticipated graduation date is May 2019. I love my program and I am completely content with how things are going! 🤓📚📝🎓😌

Why I Gave Up Scary Movies…

blog25.png

I used to love scary movies.

Every horror movie you can think of, from A to Z, I watched it. I loved the adrenaline rush. I knew something bad was coming, but ultimately I also knew that that I was safe on the other end of the screen.

Then I realized, I wasn’t safe.

This all happened about a year and half ago when I was begging my boyfriend to go see the latest horror flick with me. He was not down with the idea, he didn’t like them. I teased him and rolled my eyes- it was all fake, how could anyone not see that? Then he said something that he had said before, but this time it stuck… “that kind of stuff can happen in real life.”

He was referring to the movie The Strangers, aka his least favorite movie on the planet. After he said that, something must have stuck with me, because scary movies haven’t felt the same since then.

I started thinking about how I was not truly safe while watching these movies. I realized:

1. I was not protecting my physical body.

My hands would sweat, my stomach would turn, my body would tense up and I’d hide behind a bucket of popcorn. I started questioning why I was physically putting my body through the stress of fear.

2. I was not protecting my heart.

Then I questioned why I was putting my heart through it… I was not protecting my heart from the evils of the world. Trust me, I have seen some pretty gruesome things on screen, and I can never un-see them. I made the choice to watch and now I have to live with it.

3. I was glorifying evil.

Finally, I questioned why I was allowing myself to glorify evil and demonic things. And I was actually paying money to see it in theaters!

Ephesians 5:11 says: Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.

It is the season of scary movies. I realize a lot of people watch horror movies, and I don’t think they’re bad people for it… I am definitely not judging anyone for it. I was one of those people that loved them, I used to think it was just harmful entertainment.

It wasn’t until I took a step back and was honest with myself about what I was watching that I decided I was done.  There is already so much evil in this world, do we really need to willingly stream more of it into our thoughts?

Minimalism: What To Declutter…

blog23.png

Today I’m sharing with some things that I have gotten rid of or stopped buying since I began my minimalist journey. Decluttering these items has helped me feel free from material possessions and less stressed. My hope is that you are able to find peace away from materialism and joy from what you do have.

DVDs, CDs, and Books.

If you are someone who loves having hard copy books then keep them, because that brings you joy! I chose to go digital though, because it takes up less space and it is more convenient for me. I know that any movie I want to watch can be recorded on my DVR, found on Netflix, or searched on my Amazon fire stick. I don’t use CDs anymore because I have Apple Music (which has everything- I LOVE IT). And honestly, I don’t sit down and read hard copy books- I usually just read other blogs on my phone! These kind of items were easy for me to get rid of. I did however, choose to keep my blue ray DVD Harry Potter collection that Troy got me for Christmas and my hard copy bible.

Your phone.

We are all guilty of it… How many apps do you actually use? When is the last time you transferred your photos over to your laptop, cleaned out your email, or deleted old contacts? Hopefully this is an easy category for you to declutter! Take some time to sit down and think about what is on your phone that you actually need or that brings you joy- then delete the rest!

Pictures, Letters, and Cards.

For this category, if you can scan it onto your computer and keep it safe on an external hard drive- then you can toss it. I had so many pictures, notes, letters, and cards that were crammed into my memory box. I decided to scan everything onto my laptop so that I could have access to them, but also so they would take up less physical space. This made me feel good because I knew I was not totally getting rid of them. I realize that some of these things may be sentimental items, so keep the ones that bring you joy and digitize the rest.

Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories.

This is something that I cannot stress enough… PURGE YOUR CLOSET! Start by pulling everything out of it and separating your items into keep, toss, and maybe piles. If you know you don’t wear something because it doesn’t fit, it’s damaged, or it isn’t really your style anymore… then toss it. If you feel guilty because the item is really high quality, try selling it online or taking it to Plato’s closet. Otherwise, the clothes that are in your “toss” pile can be donated or thrown away. Now hang your “keep” and “unsure” piles in your closet, but turn the hangers backwards from the way you normally hang them. After you have worn something, turn your hanger back to normal. 6 months – 1 year later, take inventory of your clothes and look at your hangers. If you have items with backwards hangers, then you maybe you do not need it anymore and can toss it.

__________________________________

Disclaimer: I am a very clean and organized person. However, before I started getting into minimalism I did not even realize how much stuff I was holding onto that I did not need. If you declutter one particular category a day, the process will seem a lot less overwhelming

Take a minute to take inventory of your possessions- do you need them?

Do they bring you joy?

2017 Fall Decor Haul…

blog21.png

It’s the (other) most wonderful time of the year… FALL!

Not only is this my favorite season, but I also adore the decor that comes along with it.

With that being said- welcome to my 2017 fall decor haul!

IMG_3789.JPG

IMG_3796.JPG

First, I want to share with you my accumulated fall decor thus far:

  • My pumpkin blanket, small jack-o-lantern, and “thankful for” board sign came from Target.
  • My garland, two glittery pumpkins, and football turkey came from Michael’s.
  • My two brown frames, and two small candles came from Walmart.
  • My marshmallow fireside candle and candle holder came from bath and body works.
  • & Finally, my gold frame, package of leaves, small bail of hay, two packs of string lights, two glass pumpkins, three shiny pumpkins, and home sweet home sign came from the dollar tree!

IMG_3817.JPG

I currently live at home while I am working on my masters degree. I am saving money so that in a few years when Troy and I are married we can buy our first house! (You do not even understand how excited I am to decorate an entire house!!!) But for now, I just decorate my bedroom.

I do not set all my decor out at once. Some pieces I wait until a October and November to set out because I feel like they work better for specific holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving.

The photos above show exactly how I set everything up (minus my backwards bachelors degree on my dresser for privacy reasons). I have accumulated all of this decor over the past two years, and I have not paid more than $15 on a single item!

My most expensive item was my pumpkin throw blanket (Target- $14.99), and my cheapest item was my Pumpkin Spice mini candle (Walmart- .94 cents). My advice for holiday decorating is to always shop at bargain stores, use coupons, and wait for sales!

Happy decorating! XOXO 🎃🍂🐿🍁

An Open Letter From The Girl Who Doesn’t Party…

blog20(0).png

Dear Reader,

First, I want you to know I am not stuck up. Just because my weekend agenda is different from yours does not mean I think any less of you. Sometimes I get the feeling that you think that.

I have probably gone a total of 5 times to parties or bars throughout my entire college existence.

The reason why I don’t go out often is probably not at all what you think… I am not against alcohol or social gatherings. Honestly it’s just that at the end of the day- I’m not that into it.

I prefer sitting around a bonfire, going to dinner, catching a movie… I also prefer less people and going to bed before midnight. Maybe that makes me sound like a granny, I don’t know… but I do not I’m not grumpy or hungover the next morning!

If given the choice, I will almost always pick the calmer environment.

My personality is somewhere in the middle of  introvert/extrovert spectrum. I am an extremely bubbly personality (ask anyone who knows me), but I just choose to spend my time differently than most people my age do. What can I say? I’m an old soul.

Yours truly,

The Girl who Doesn’t Party

2017 Summer Favorites…

blog19.png

As summer draws to a close and autumn approaches, I decided to post my final warm-weather blog of 2017. I hope you enjoy my 2017 summer favorites… leave a comment below and tell me what yours are!

BEAUTY:

Endless Weekend – Bath and Body Works

FASHION:

Off the shoulder shirt – Target

Double sided carpet tape – Walmart. This product is my favorite fashion hack of the summer! I take a small piece of this tape and stick it to the inside of my sleeveless shirts to help them stay on my shoulders! It doesn’t irritate my skin or leave a sticky residue. I totally recommend it.

White linen capris – Old Navy. The comfiest pants ever invented. And the best part is you can dress them up or dress them down!

2 for $20 Sunglasses – Icing

LIFESTYLE:

The TV show I could not stop watching this summer was New girl!  I started this from episode 1 on Netflix and I’m now into season 2. I love the chemistry between all the characters, and really like Jess’s quirky personality!

My favorite move of the summer was Baby Driver! I don’t normally prefer an action movie, but this flick had a little bit of everything in it. Ansel Elgort made the iPod cool again. Love love love.

Target 4th of July dollar spot… need I say more?
